Helping your child understand their feelings

Watch Kathryn talking about how to acknowledge or name your child's feelings.

Try to name what your child is feeling - you can do this at any age. For example - You are feeling very excited aren't you, because this is your favourite toy! Or - You're feeling sad because you don't like having your nappy changed, I'm sorry. Or - You look like you're feeling very frustrated because you can't see your friends, it is very difficult.

This will help your child feel like you understand them and are supportive of them. It will also help your child understand their feelings and be able to manage them better.

Your child may be having lots of strong feelings now so this is a good time to try acknowledging feelings.
