Let's all shine, online! 5 tips to get you online confidently

Let's all shine, online! 5 tips to get you online confidently

Right now, most of us are going online more than ever. We want you to feel confident, safe and have FUN online. Here are some top tips on how to make it happen.

*If you need online support, we have a team of lovely Digital Volunteers, that can give you 1-2-1 or group help. Contact Ellie for more information, more details below.

1) Improve your digital skills

We all have different levels of digital knowledge, and some of us rely on others, like our kids, to help us access things online. There are lots of FREE resources available for you to improve your digital skills.

Visit this page and click on ‘Computer Essentials’ for 6 free courses to help you use a computer, the internet and office programs like spreadsheets.

Want to learn coding? Visit the same page above and click ‘Coding’ for 10 free courses.

2) Be safe, feel confident

The online world can be a scary place at times. We hear about hackers, viruses and fake news. Don’t let that put you off. Make sure you take the right steps and feel safe online.

Click here for some useful tips and reminders on internet safety.

For kids, there are child-friendly lessons on YouTube, for example this video from Wellcast:

Or this useful resource from CBBC.

3) Stay connected

We might not always be able to see family and friends face-to-face, so it’s important we keep contact in other ways. There are a number of online tools that let us meet in groups and see each others’ faces: zoom, facetime, Whatsapp and Facebook to name a few!

PACT continues to run our program of activities online, we share details in our text messages, or check out our blog post for October here.

If you need help using Zoom, take a look at this tutorial, or get in touch with us for support.

4) Learn new skills

The internet can be a key to unlocking new skills and interests. Ever wanted to learn about marketing, finance or social care?

Southwark and Lambeth have over 50 FREE online courses you can enroll in to gain these new skills and accreditations.

Future Learn also runs courses from the UKs top universities for FREE (option to pay for unlimited access), check them out here

5) Have fun and be mindful!

Listen to music, watch funny videos and send memes! Being online doesn’t always need to be serious, and make sure you share things with loved ones you think would appreciate it too.

Finally, like most things, being online is about balance. Do not spend too much time alone or with your kids in front of your kids. Get outside when you can, do exercise and avoid using screens late at night. For tips on looking after your wellbeing look here:
